Video Overview: Learning the Basics of Online Safety

Watch our animated video where Hoot the Owl introduces you to the most important parts of staying safe online. You’ll see real-life situations that show how to protect yourself and others while using the internet. Here’s what each scene includes:

  • Scene 1: Introduction to online safety and why it’s important to protect your personal information.
  • Scene 2: How to create strong passwords that are hard for others to guess.
  • Scene 3: How to use privacy settings to keep your information safe.
  • Scene 4: How to recognize online scams and avoid them.
  • Scene 5: What to do if you see cyberbullying and how to support others.
  • Scene 6: A final review of everything you’ve learned, with a helpful recap from Hoot.

Here’s an In-Depth Explanation of Some Things You Learned in the Video 🪄

Creating Strong Passwords:
A strong password is like a secret code that keeps your accounts safe. Good passwords are long, use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, and are different for each account. You should never share your password, even with friends. You can also use password managers (with the help of an adult) to keep track of your passwords safely.

Using Privacy Settings:
Your personal information—like your name, birthday, and location—is valuable and should be kept private. Privacy settings help you choose who can see what you post or share. In this lesson, you learned how to adjust these settings and why it’s smart to check them often to stay protected.

Recognizing Scams:
Some people online may try to trick you into sharing private information. These tricks are called scams. They might offer fake prizes, pretend to be someone you know, or ask for money. You learned how to spot these scams, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and how to ask a grown-up if you’re unsure about something online.

Handling Cyberbullying:
Cyberbullying is when someone is mean or hurtful online. It’s never okay. In this lesson, you learned how to deal with bullying in a smart and kind way. That includes not replying to mean messages, using report or block tools on apps, and reaching out to support someone who’s being picked on.

Password Potion: Pick the Strong Spells!🧪

Welcome, young wizard!
Hoot the Owl needs your help mixing a powerful password potion! 🧙‍♀️
But be careful—not all passwords are safe! Some are weak and can make your potion explode!

Your mission is to choose only the strong passwords that will protect your magical accounts from sneaky digital creatures. The stronger the password, the better your potion will be!

🧩 How to Play:

  • Look at the passwords on the screen.
  • Drag the strong passwords into the glowing cauldron.
  • Drag the weak passwords into the trash to throw them away.
  • If you choose right, your potion will glow with wizard power!
  • If you choose wrong… the potion might bubble over! 😬

Are you ready to become a Password Master?
Let’s begin your training, Cyber Wizard! 🧙‍♂️✨

🧩 Quest 1: Create Your Own Strong Passphrase

Objective: Learn what makes a strong, secure passphrase through storytelling, group brainstorming, and verbal creativity

Instructions:

  1. Set the Scene (2–3 min):“Imagine you’re wizards protecting your treasure vaults with a magic spell — your passphrase. Weak spells get broken easily. So, we need strong, strange, and secret ones.”
  2. Ask: “What do most people use as passwords?”
    • Common answers: 123456password, pet names, birthdays.
    • Guide the discussion: Are these safe? Why or why not?
  3. Introduce the 3 Rules of a Strong Passphrase (3–5 min):
Say and repeat aloud (students can echo or chant):
    • “More than 12 characters!”
    • “Easy for ME to remember!”
    • “Hard for OTHERS to guess!”
  4. Group Brainstorm Challenge (5–7 min):“Let’s invent some silly, strong passphrases together!”Ask for:
    • A favorite animal
    • A weird food
    • A random number
    • A magical or funny word
    • A symbol (like ! or ?)
    Example output:
    • Students shout: “Llama!” “Spaghetti!” “42!” “Zap!”
    • You combine: LlamaSpaghetti42!Zap
Create a few as a group. Ask: Is this easy to remember? Would a hacker guess it?
  5. Team Mini-Challenge (3–5 min):
    • Break into small groups or pairs.
    • Each group verbally creates a strong, silly passphrase using the same steps.
    • Each team shares their favorite aloud.
    • Vote on the “most magical,” “weirdest,” or “strongest” spell!
  6. Wrap-up Discussion (2–3 min):
    Ask:
    • Why is a silly passphrase better than using your pet’s name?
    • What tricks can help you remember one?
    • Should you ever share your passphrase?

🔍 Quest 2: Privacy Settings Detective

Objective: Investigate how apps collect data and learn how to manage permissions.

Instructions:

  1. Set the Scene (2–3 min):“You’re about to download a new app or game — could be something like TikTok, YouTube, Minecraft, or even a made-up app like ‘Dancing Dinosaur Selfie Cam 3000’. But before you start using it, your phone asks: ‘This app wants permission to…’ What do you do?”Explain: Apps often ask for access to things like:
      • Camera
      • Microphone
      • Location
      • Contacts
      • Photos
      • Notifications
  2. Group Brainstorm: What Apps Ask For (5 min)Ask the class:
    • “Who has downloaded an app before?”
    • “What kind of permissions have you seen apps ask for?”
(Call out answers and list them on the board if available)
    Examples:
    • “Allow access to your camera?”
    • “Track your location in the background?”
    • “Access your contacts?”
  3. Team Roleplay: Privacy Detectives (7–10 min) Put students into small groups or pairs.“Pretend you’re installing a new app. Choose one — real or made-up. Now pretend you’re Privacy Detectives: decide which permissions you’d allow, block, or ask an adult about.”Each team should:
    • Name their app (e.g., “Zombie Selfie Racer” or “Cat Karaoke”)
    • Come up with 3–5 permissions it asks for
    • Decide:
      • ✅ Allow
      • ❌ Block
      • ❓ Ask an adult
  4. Detective Debrief: Share & Reflect (5–7 min)Each team shares:
    • One permission their app requested
    • What they decided to do with it and why
    Discussion prompts:
    • “Why might a game ask for your location?”
    • “Why might you block the microphone?”
    • “When is it important to ask an adult?”
    • “Can apps track you even when you’re not using them?”

Lesson 2: Guarding Your Digital Treasures 🛡️

Welcome back, young Cyber Wizards🧙‍♂️! In this lesson, Hoot the Owl will teach you how to protect your digital footprints—these are the small traces you leave behind when you go online. Every time you visit a website, watch a video, or post a photo, you’re adding to your digital trail. But don’t worry! Hoot will show you how to take control and make smart choices so your online actions stay safe and private. Ready to keep your digital trail protected? Let’s begin!

Cyber wizard lesson images 1 1

Video Overview: Understanding Your Digital Footprints

Watch our animated video where Hoot guides you through the importance of managing your digital footprints effectively. You’ll see practical examples of how online actions can leave a mark and what you can do to stay safe. Here’s what each scene covers:

  • Scene 1: Introduction to the concept of digital footprints and how they can be helpful or harmful.
  • Scene 2: Smart tips for using shared devices like school computers or a friend’s tablet.
  • Scene 3: Ways to keep your social media accounts secure and visible only to people you trust.
  • Scene 4: Learning how online games and websites might try to trick you into spending money or giving out personal information.
  • Scene 5: Turning off chats or friend requests from strangers in games and remembering not to share real names or private details.
  • Scene 6: A final review of the best ways to keep your digital footprint safe and smart.

Here’s an In-Depth Explanation of Some Things You Learned in the Video 🪄

Managing Digital Footprints:
Everything you do online leaves a mark, like a trail of footprints. These can be helpful, like when a website remembers your favorite show, but they can also share too much if you’re not careful. That’s why it’s important to think before you post or click. If you wouldn’t want something written on your shirt for everyone to see, it’s probably better not to post it.

Using Shared Devices Safely:
If you’re using a computer or tablet that isn’t yours—like at school or at a friend’s house—don’t click “Remember Me” or save your password. Always log out when you’re finished. You can also protect your own device by using a passcode, fingerprint, or face ID to keep your information locked away.

Securing Social Media:
It’s fun to share pictures and messages online, but it’s important to stay safe. Make your account private so only people you know can see your posts. You can also link your account to a parent’s email so that if anything goes wrong, you have help getting it back. Think of your account like your own space—only invite people you trust.

Being Safe in Online Games:
Some games might try to trick you into buying things or talking to strangers. These messages might look exciting, but they’re not always safe. If a game ever tells you to hurry up and buy something or if someone you don’t know sends you a message, stop and ask a grown-up what to do. You can also change your game settings to turn off public chats and stop friend requests from people you don’t know.

Fix the Scroll📜

Oh no! Our young wizard and their magical cat found an old scroll… but it’s missing some important words!
Your mission is to help them fix the scroll by dragging the right words into the blank spaces. Each sentence is about how to stay safe, smart, and kind online.

🪄 How to Play:

  • Read each question carefully.
  • Choose the answer you think is right.
  • Move to the next question when you’re ready.

💡 If you’re stuck, remember what you learned in Module 2 about digital footprints and making smart online choices.
Your wizard training has prepared you well!

1. Set the Scene (2–3 min):

“You’re now a Digital Detective. Everything you post online—comments, likes, photos, usernames—leaves a trace. Imagine someone following those clues. What would they learn about you?”

2. Silent Reflection (2 min):
Ask students to close their eyes and think:

  • What’s the last thing you posted, liked, or commented on—on any platform?
  • Would you be okay if your teacher, future boss, or family saw that?

3. Verbal Scan (5 min):
Guide them through an imaginary review:

  • “Picture your gaming profile, Instagram, or TikTok—real or made-up.”
  • Ask out loud, pausing for them to reflect:
    • What kinds of things have you shared?
    • Is your real name or school visible?
    • Any personal details someone could misuse?
    • Are there any posts or comments you’d now delete?

4. Small Group Discussion (5–7 min):
Break into pairs or small teams. Ask them to discuss:

  • One example of a positive digital footprint (e.g., being kind in a comment).
  • One example of something that could hurt someone’s reputation.
  • One privacy setting or choice they’ve used or learned about.

5. Whole-Class Debrief (3–5 min):
Prompt discussion:

  • “Why does your digital footprint matter for your future?”
  • “What could an employer, coach, or college learn from your online activity?”
  • “How can you start managing your footprint today?”

🔍 Quest 2: Digital Truth Sleuths

Objective: Practice spotting misinformation and learn how to build a positive, respectful online reputation.

Instructions:

    • What clues helped you figure out which information was true or false?
    • Why is it important to check facts before sharing something?
    • How can you help others stay safe from misinformation?
    • What are some ways you can build a positive reputation online?
  5. Each team creates a “Digital Truth and Respect Pledge” on a blank sheet of paper, including:
    • How they will check information before sharing
    • Ways they will be kind and respectful online
    • How they’ll encourage others to do the same
  6. Share your pledges with the class.

You’ll also learn how to help others and grow your digital skills. Ready to finish your wizard training? Let’s go!

Cyber wizard lesson images 2

Video Overview: Keeping Your Devices Safe and Spotting Online Tricks

In this video, Hoot the Owl will show you how to guard your gadgets, protect your private info, and be smart online. You’ll watch real examples and learn how to make good choices when you’re using your devices. Here’s what each scene covers:

  • Scene 1: Introduction to protecting your devices and why it’s important.
  • Scene 2: How updates and safe downloads help protect your devices.
  • Scene 3: How to check app permissions and keep personal info private.
  • Scene 4: How to spot fake videos, scams, and clickbait online.
  • Scene 5: How to help others and grow your own digital skills.
  • Scene 6: A final review of everything you’ve learned in all three modules!

Here’s an In-Depth Explanation of Some Things You Learned in the Video 🪄

Keeping Your Devices Safe:
Your devices—like your tablet or laptop—need to be taken care of just like your school supplies or your wizard wand. That means keeping them up to date with new fixes (called updates). Updates help block things like viruses, which are sneaky programs that can mess up your device or steal your information. You also learned that it’s best to only download apps or games from trusted places, like the App Store or Google Play. If you use a school or library computer, remember to always log out when you’re done.

Checking App Permissions:
Some apps and games ask for things like your location or camera access, but not all of them really need it. We showed you how to go into your settings and turn off things that aren’t needed. For example, a puzzle game doesn’t need to know where you are! We also talked about how it’s safer to use a nickname and a cartoon picture (called an avatar) instead of your real name and photo.

Outsmarting Online Tricksters:
Not everything you see online is true. Some videos or pictures are edited to look real when they’re not. These are called deepfakes. You may also see fake ads that say things like “Click here for free gems!” These are clickbait—they try to get your attention and may lead to scams. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. You learned to slow down, think, and ask a grown-up before clicking.

Helping Others and Growing Your Skills:
Being a Cyber Wizard means helping others too! You can show your little brother, sister, or even a grandparent how to stay safe. You also started learning about cool tech skills like how websites work, how search engines find things, and how websites keep track of what you click. Learning these things makes you a smarter and stronger digital citizen!

Welcome back, brave Cyber Wizard! 🪄
Your training is almost complete—but first, it’s time to test your digital wisdom in the Safety Sorting Challenge!

  • Drag it into the correct scroll:
    • One for Good Wizard Choices

🧩 Quest 1: Tech Detective — How Devices and Networks Connect

Objective:
Understand the basics of how computers, smartphones, and networks communicate.

Instructions:

1. Set the Scene (2 min):

“You’re all Tech Detectives on a mission to uncover how your devices talk to each other. Every time you open an app, send a message, or play an online game, data zooms across invisible pathways. Let’s figure out how!”

2. Group Brainstorm (3–5 min):
Ask the class:

“What devices are involved when you send a photo to a friend, or watch a video online?”

Write answers on the board (or have students list aloud):
📱 Smartphone
💻 Laptop
📶 Wi-Fi
☁️ Cloud storage
📡 Router
🖥️ Server
🔐 Encryption (if someone mentions security)

3. Interactive Role Play (5–7 min):
Assign roles: each student (or pair) acts as one of these components:

  • Device (phone, laptop, tablet)
  • Router
  • Wi-Fi signal
  • Server or cloud
  • App or website
  • Hacker (optional for discussion)

Create a human “network map”:

  • Ask students to stand in order of how data might travel:
    (e.g., Phone → Wi-Fi → Router → Server → Cloud → and back)
  • Use fingers or imaginary string to “pass data” down the line
  • Ask:
    • “What happens if one link breaks?”
    • “Where might data be at risk?”
    • “How is it protected on the way?”

4. Team Discussion (5 min):

“In your group, imagine sending a message or playing a game online. Walk through the steps:”

  • What happens from device to app?
  • Where does data go?
  • How can it be intercepted?
  • What tools (like passwords or encryption) keep it safe?

5. Optional: Digital Exploration (5–10 min)
If devices are available, students can explore:
🔗 How the Internet Works – Interactive Guide (Mozilla)
🌐 Google’s Internet Infrastructure Tour (Fiber)
🔍 CS Unplugged: Internet Routing Game

6. Wrap-Up Questions (3–5 min):
Ask students to reflect:

  • “Which device is the most important?”
  • “What surprised you about how data travels?”
  • “How do you think the internet keeps information private?”

🔍 Quest 2: Scam Spotters — Recognize Fake Security Alerts & Tech Support Scams

Objective:
Learn how to spot fake security alerts and avoid tech support scams.

Instructions:

1. Introduction (3–5 min):

  • Explain to the class: “You’re Scam Spotters! Your job is to spot fake alerts that try to trick you.”
  • Ask: “What kind of fake alerts or calls have you heard about or seen?”

2. Scam Alert Discussion (10 min):

  • Verbally describe several common fake alerts or scam messages (e.g., “Your device is infected!” pop-up, urgent email asking for password).
  • Ask students to say if they think each is real or fake — and why.
  • Discuss common signs of scams: urgency, asking for passwords or money, bad grammar, suspicious links.

3. Scam Call Role-Play (7–10 min):

  • Pair students up.
  • One acts as a scammer calling to “help” fix a problem by asking for personal info.
  • The other practices safe responses:
    • “I don’t share passwords.”
    • “I’ll check with an adult first.”
    • “I’m hanging up now.”
  • Switch roles and repeat.

4. Scam Spotter Tips Sharing (5 min):

  • As a class, brainstorm and list out loud tips for spotting scams:
    • Don’t click on scary pop-ups.
    • Real companies don’t ask for your password.
    • Check who’s sending messages.
    • Ask an adult if unsure.
    • Hang up or delete suspicious messages.
