Checking your Digital Life

Stop guessing. Find out what your digital life actually looks like. Grab your phone and take a few minutes to review your settings, permissions, accounts, and habits. You might discover things you didn’t know were switched on, connected or visible.

iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
Android: Settings → Privacy → Permission Manager → Microphone
Look for: How many apps can use your microphone?
Do this: Turn off microphone access for one app that doesn’t need it.

iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
Android: Settings → Location → App permissions
Look for: Which apps can access your location?
Do this: Change one app’s location access if it doesn’t need it.

iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
Android: Settings → Privacy → Permission Manager → Camera
Look for: How many apps can use your camera?
Do this: Remove camera access from one app that doesn’t need it.

iPhone & Android: Turn your phone off, then examine what shows up when you turn it on. Consider the lock screen, notification messages, if you can reply to a message on the lock screen, etc.
Look for: Can someone see message content without unlocking your phone?
Do this: Hide sensitive notification content on your lock screen.
– iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Show Previews
– Android: Settings → Notifications → Lock screen

Open the service you use to store your passwords and review your saved accounts. If you memorize your passwords instead, mentally review them.
Look for: Are you using different passwords for different accounts? If you can easily remember most of them, you may be relying on too few variations or patterns.
Do this: Pick one important account that uses a repeated or predictable password and change it to a unique password you don’t use anywhere else.

Open your app list and look for apps you haven’t used recently.
Look for: Apps you forgot you had.
Do this: Delete one app you no longer use.

You just took an important step toward taking your tech on your own terms. Your accounts, passwords, permissions and settings are yours to control. Don’t want an app to have access? Revoke it. Want stronger, unique passwords? Create them. Find a setting you don’t like? Change it.
