Cybersecurity is for everyone — not just experts. If you’re a newcomer to Canada, new to using technology, or just want to improve your digital habits, this free, in-person session is designed to help you feel safe, confident, and in control online.

Led by the KnowledgeFlow Cybersafety Foundation, a Canadian nonprofit that specializes in community-based cybersecurity education, this session breaks down online safety into easy steps that anyone can follow — no technical experience needed.

What You’ll Learn About Cybersecurity

This practical workshop will cover key topics like:

  • How to recognize common online scams, fake emails, frauds, and suspicious messages — with real-life examples that are relevant to newcomers
  • How to protect your phone, computer, accounts, and passwords from harm
  • What to watch out for on social media, public Wi-Fi, or unfamiliar websites
  • Safe and smart ways to use online banking, shopping, and money transfer apps
  • Where to find trusted support and free resources in your language, even after the session ends

To find more practical advice and essential tips on how to avoid scams and fraud, access our Newcomer’s Guide to Avoiding Scams and Fraud.

newcomersCybersecurity for Newcomers: Why It Matters

Staying safe online is a modern life skill — especially when you’re navigating a new country and relying on the internet to apply for services, connect with your community, look for work, or stay in touch with loved ones abroad. According to a study by Scotiabank, 38% of newcomers to Canada are targeted by fraudsters.

This welcoming session designed for newcomers specifically will help you build the digital confidence you need to protect yourself and your information online.

What this session offers:

  • A friendly, no-judgment environment where everyone is welcome
  • Plain-language advice that’s easy to understand and apply
  • Interactive examples to help you recognize real-world scams and risks
  • Support for all experience levels — whether you’re just getting started or want to brush up on your knowledge

The internet can open doors—but only if you know how to walk through them safely.
