In-Person | Ajax | Fall 2025
Six Sessions | 2-Hour Workshops | Bring Your Own Device or Use a Loaner

Protect Yourself from Scams, Fraud, and Digital Risks

Online scams targeting older adults are becoming more convincing, and more dangerous than ever. Using artificial intelligence, scammers can now fake voices, create lifelike phishing messages, and manipulate content across social media, games, and texts.

This six-part, hands-on cybersafety series is designed to help you recognize, avoid, and recover from digital threats while confidently using the internet, email, apps, banking, and more.

Cybersafety isn’t just a tech issue—it’s a life skill. For older adults, staying safe online means clicking with confidence, protecting independence, finances, and personal dignity in an increasingly digital world.

older adultsProgram Overview

Presented by the KnowledgeFlow Cybersafety Foundation, and in partnership with the Town of Ajax, this workshop series offers a safe, friendly, and practical space to learn essential online safety skills. Each session is interactive, with real-time practice on your own phone, tablet, or laptop—or you can borrow a device if needed.

What makes this program unique:

  • Fraud Prevention Lens: Scam awareness is woven into every session
  • AI Awareness Built-In: Learn how artificial intelligence is shaping online scams, including voice cloning, fake messages, and deepfake content
  • Hands-On Practice: Work directly on your own device, or borrow one
  • #UnHackable Framework: Be Private, Be Secure, Be Skeptical, Be Positive
  • Flexible Learning: Attend all six sessions for the full experience—or drop in for the ones you need most

Session Breakdown: Learning To Become Tech Wise

Session 1 – Spotting Scams & Fraud: Your First Line of Defense

Learn how to spot common scams targeting seniors, including phone fraud, fake emails, and suspicious texts. Understand the four scam red flags: fear, urgency, authority, and money. This session builds the foundation; knowing what to look for helps you stop scams before they start.

If you believe that you have been a target of fraud, report the crime to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Session 2 – Protecting Accounts & Devices: Tools to Keep Hackers Out

Go beyond passwords. Learn to use password managers, enable two-factor authentication, and secure your devices against identity theft. You don’t need to remember everything—just use the right tools to lock out threats.

Session 3 – Safer Email & Messaging: Spot the Tricks, Protect Your Inbox

Learn how to identify fake messages, unsafe attachments, and spoofed numbers. Get comfortable verifying senders before you click or reply. Every message isn’t what it seems—learn to stay skeptical and safe.

Session 4 – Safer Browsing & Social Media: Stay Connected, Stay in Control

Understand privacy settings on Facebook and other platforms, block unsafe ads, manage permissions, and browse more safely. You can enjoy social media without oversharing or putting your information at risk.

Session 5 – Protecting Your Money & Information: Safe Banking, Shopping, and Services

Practice safe online banking, recognize fake websites, and learn how to use secure Wi-Fi for sensitive activities. If money or personal info is involved, it’s worth taking an extra moment to stay secure.

Session 6 – Managing Your Digital Assets: Safeguard Your Online Valuables

Your digital photos, accounts, and information matter. Learn how to control your digital footprint, reduce data collection, and manage your accounts with tools like asset inventories and legacy planning. Your digital life is valuable; take control and protect what matters.
