The “Help Me Set Up A New Account” Scam: Protect Yourself

Scammers are using compromised social media accounts to impersonate your friends and ask for help “setting up their new account” by asking you to provide them with a code or to click on a link.

Be skeptical! Your account becomes compromised once you give the code or click the link. Once compromised, the fraudsters contact your friends list through your account, asking for the same favour while impersonating you.

The CAFC has also received reports of clicking on the link provided leading to bank account takeovers. If a friend reaches out for help on social media, contact them through another form of communication by using their personal phone number.
