“CyberShield: Empowering Nonprofits to Defend Against Online Hate” A Powerful Tool to Aid NPOs in Fighting Against the Rising Threat of Hate Speech
Toronto, ON – In response to the growing threat of online hate, KnowledgeFlow Cybersafety Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a new cybersafety course specifically designed for nonprofit organizations. This initiative aims to equip nonprofits with the tools and knowledge necessary to protect themselves and their communities from online hate. “KnowledgeFlow believes in making the internet a safe space for all, one full of kindness instead of hate, and this course is just one step further in our mission”, commented Executive Director Debra Popa.
According to a survey about online harms from Toronto Metropolitan University, conducted in April of 2024, 61 percent of White respondents’ report having seen hate speech online and an even higher 71 percent of those with a visible minority identity have seen it. 2SLGBTQ+ respondents (72 percent) and newcomers to Canada in the last 10 years (73 percent) also reported seeing similar amounts of hate online. Now more than ever, KnowledgeFlow strives to prepare nonprofits to proactively defend themselves, and the marginalized communities they work with, against exposure to threats and hateful ideologies. “KnowledgeFlow is committed to supporting nonprofits in their mission to create positive change,” said Paige Backman, KnowledgeFlow co-founder. “This cybersafety course is a crucial step in ensuring that these organizations can operate safely and effectively in the digital age.”

Why This Course Matters
Nonprofits often serve as the backbone of our communities, providing critical services and support. However, they are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals and online hate groups. The CyberShield course is designed to empower these organizations to continue their vital work without fear of hateful attacks. Knowledge co-founder and cybersecurity expert Claudiu Popa explains, “As a nonprofit ourselves, we understand the importance of serving our community. We wanted to give back to those organizations that do it so well, to support them in their important mission to make the world a better place.”
