As Nova continued learning about life on Earth, she discovered that talking with friends didn’t always happen face-to-face. After school, many of her classmates stayed connected through group chats where they shared jokes, homework questions, funny videos, and plans for the weekend.

One afternoon, Nova’s classmate Emma smiled and said, ”You should join our Grade 5 group chat! Almost everyone in our class is in it.” Nova was excited. “This will be a great way to get to know everyone better,” she thought.

That evening, Nova’s parents gave her permission to join the chat. At first, everything was exactly as she had imagined. Everyone was chatting about homework, sports, favourite games, and what they were doing over the weekend.

The messages came quickly.

“Who’s ready for soccer tomorrow?”

“Did anyone finish the math homework for Mrs. Polly’s class?”

“Check out this funny cat video! 😂”

Nova smiled. “This is fun,” she thought. “Everyone is so friendly.”

A little while later, the conversation changed. One student mentioned a classmate who wasn’t part of the group chat.

“Remember when they tripped during gym class?” Several classmates replied with laughing emojis.

“😂😂😂 That was so funny!”

One classmate asked, “Ugh, I missed gym class today! Can someone tell me what happened?”

Wanting to catch them up, Nova remembered the moment her classmate had accidentally tripped during gym class. Everyone had laughed at the time, including the student who fell, so Nova didn’t think it would be a big deal to share what had happened. She simply wanted to answer the question and be part of the conversation.

Nova typed a short message describing the incident.

At first, nothing seemed unusual. Then more notifications appeared.

One classmate turned the story into a meme. Another gave the student an embarrassing nickname. Soon, students who hadn’t even been in gym class were reacting with laughing emojis, adding unkind comments, and sharing the story with others outside the group chat.

By the next morning, the story had spread around the entire grade 5 cohort. The student who had tripped found out about the messages and the associated memes and felt embarrassed and hurt. When the teacher spoke to the class, several students explained that Nova’s message was the first one that brought up what had happened in the group chat.

Nova couldn’t believe it.

She had never wanted to embarrass anyone or encourage bullying. She hadn’t created the memes or written the mean comments, but she realized that by sharing the story online, she had unintentionally started a conversation that quickly grew into cyberbullying.

Feeling worried about what had happened, Nova immediately sent an emergency transmission to you, one of her digital Ambassadors:

“Digital Ambassadors, I only shared something that really happened. I didn’t make the memes or write the mean comments afterward, but everyone says I helped start the bullying. Did I do something wrong? What should I have done instead?”
