Tools To Prevent Misinformation

  • Vaya a https://www.snopes.com/.
  • Copy some of the phrases below, and search it in the search bar.
    • “Herbal supplements are always safe because they’re natural”.
    • “You can’t spoil or decline your ballot in a Canadian federal election.”
  • Read the fact-check result. What did they find? True, false, or mixed?

AI Slop – Real or fake?

  • Look at each picture on the screen.
  • Review the two labels: “Non-AI Image” y “AI-Generated.”
  • Drag the correct label onto each picture.
  • When all images are labelled, submit your answers to see how well you identified real versus AI-generated content.

Social Media Privacy Settings

  • Open your social media profile (Facebook, Instagram).
  • Check if your birthday, phone number, location, or email are visible.
  • Tap Edit Profile or Privacy Settings to hide or remove details you don’t want public.

Facebook

  • Abrir Facebook and go to Ajustes.
  • Scroll to Audience and Visibility, a continuación, haga clic en Profile Details.
  • Look for personal information such as birthday, phone number, location, workplace, or email.

Is it Safe To Post?

Log in to your social media account (Facebook, Instagram), and browse through your activity log or posts in settings. Imagine that a stranger was able to see everything in your activity log; is there anything you would change to protect your privacy?


Managing Account Visibility

Facebook

  • Click your profile picture (top right of the Facebook homepage).
  • Select Settings & privacy from the dropdown.
  • Click Settings.
  • In the left sidebar, go to Audience and visibility.
  • Control who can follow you, see your posts, and more.

Instagram

  • On your Instagram homepage, click Más (bottom left corner on desktop or menu icon on mobile).
  • Haga clic en Ajustes.
  • Scroll and select Account Privacy.
  • Turn on the switch next to Cuenta privada.

When your account is private, only approved followers can see your posts and stories.

Evaluación de la autenticidad de los perfiles

El objetivo de esta actividad es que aprendas a evaluar la autenticidad de los perfiles de las redes sociales y a reconocer posibles signos de estafa o cuentas falsas. Explorando cada perfil e identificando banderas rojas y verdes, reforzarás tu capacidad para detectar comportamientos sospechosos, detectar cuentas generadas por IA o suplantadas y tomar decisiones más seguras cuando te conectes o compartas información en línea.

Instrucciones:

Utiliza el ratón para explorar y hacer clic en varias secciones de cada perfil para descubrir puntos calientes ocultos. Hay 12 puntos calientes en total, que consisten en:

  • 5 banderas verdes - indicadores de autenticidad
  • 7 señales de alarma: posibles indicios de que el perfil puede haber sido generado por IA

Managing Social Media Ads

Scroll through your social media. What kind of ads do you see?

  • Do you think you are the right target audience?
  • Would you change your ad settings?

Facebook Ad Settings

  • Open Facebook and go to Configuración y privacidad.
  • Seleccione Ajustes.
  • Scroll down to Ads.

Turn off or limit:

  • Ads based on your activity from partners.
  • Ads based on your activity on Facebook Company Products.
  • Ads that include your social interactions.

En Ad Topics, choose See fewer for topics you do not want to see.

Instagram Ad Settings

  • Abre Instagram y ve a tu perfil.
  • Toque Menú (three lines).
  • Toque Configuración y privacidad.
  • Scroll to your app and media.
  • Toque Ads.

Review:

  • Ad topics.
  • Ad interests.
  • Data about your activity from partners (this sends you to Facebook to change the actual controls).

Across Both Meta Platforms:

  • Ir a Manage Info en Ad Preferences.
  • Seleccione “Don’t use my activity to show me ads about Meta” under “Ads about Meta on other platforms”.
  • En “Do you want us to use your activity information from ad partners to show you ads,” select “No, don’t make my ads more relevant by using this information”.

Turning these settings off in Ad Preferences will limit tracking and the number of ads displayed on your page.

In this session, you explored how to stay safer online by understanding both the benefits and risks of AI tools, learning to identify misinformation and disinformation, and using credible fact-checking resources to verify what you see. You also strengthened your digital privacy habits by reviewing app permissions, using “white lies” to protect personal details, managing cookies thoughtfully, and being mindful of what you share online. In this session, you built the skills needed to protect your identity and navigate social platforms with confidence.

  • Learn the strengths and limitations of AI tools, and verify important information with reputable fact-checking sites.
  • Recognize misinformation and disinformation, and pause before sharing suspicious posts.
  • Protect your privacy by using white lies instead of real personal details when websites request unnecessary information.
  • Avoid posting personal information and keep accounts private when sharing photos or updates.
  • Remember your digital footprint; assume anything posted online may be permanent or shareable.
  • Know what is y isn’t safe to post, especially regarding identity, location, and sensitive details.
  • Adjust account privacy settings and review ad preferences to limit data collection.
  • Be aware of scams disguised as viral posts, quizzes, or “bait” content, especially in Facebook groups.
  • Evaluate profile authenticity by checking for inconsistencies, missing details, or signs of AI-generated content.
  • Review app permissions and remove access that apps don’t need.
  • Decline optional cookies to reduce tracking when possible.
  • Turn off location sharing.
